Create a ChatGPT Prompt Course in Minutes

1. Prompting ChatGPT… for prompts

Prompts are the backbone of great results with AI. A mediocre prompt will get you nowhere. To begin our journey, let’s keep it simple by asking ChatGPT itself.

Results (TLDR at the bottom):

1. Determine the purpose of your prompt: Before you start writing a prompt, you need to determine the purpose of it. Ask yourself, what do you want ChatGPT to do? Do you want it to generate a creative story, answer a question, or have a conversation?

2. Choose your topic: Once you have identified the purpose, choose a relevant topic for your prompt. A topic could be anything from a current event to a personal experience.

3. Consider your audience: Think about who your audience is and what they are interested in. This will help you tailor your prompt to them.

4. Keep it simple: Your prompt should be clear and concise. Avoid using complicated language or jargon that your audience might not understand.

5. Use open-ended questions: Using open-ended questions in your prompts will encourage ChatGPT to provide a more detailed response. Avoid closed-ended questions that only require a yes or no answer.

6. Provide context: If you're asking ChatGPT to generate a story or provide an opinion on a topic, provide some context so it can better understand what you're asking.

7. Use keywords: Use specific keywords in your prompts to help ChatGPT better understand what you're asking. For example, if you're asking ChatGPT to generate a story about cats, make sure to include the word "cat" in your prompt.

8. Edit your prompts: Review your prompts before you submit them to make sure they are clear, concise, and have all the necessary details.

9. Experiment and revise: It may take some trial and error to find the right prompts that elicit the desired response from ChatGPT. Don't be afraid to experiment and revise your prompts to get the best results.

TLDR: Determine purpose, choose your topic, consider your audience, keep it simple, use open-ended questions, provide context, use keywords, edit your prompts, experiment and revise (arguably the most important).

But we can’t rely solely on ChatGPT. Let’s explore what we humans have to say.

2. Asking humans for the best prompts

I started by asking Google for “the best ChatGPT prompts guide”. In order to expand the scope of what we consider ‘best prompts’ I only used articles written by verifiable humans. I collected the content from the top 5 and asked ChatGPT to find 5 bullet points of commonality between them.

Results:

1. Be specific in your prompt to get a relevant and useful response.

2. Use natural language to make it easier for the chatbot to understand the context and respond appropriately.

3. Provide context for your question to get a relevant answer.

4. Avoid open-ended questions that have no clear answer.

5. Keep the prompts simple and easy to understand.

By finding a balance between humans and AI we can draw distinguishable areas of commonality: specificity, context, simplicity and using open-ended questions.

3. Using CourseAI for structure

On last week’s Sunday Signal, we featured CourseAI. Today, we’re using it to generate our course outline.

Luckily, it’s idiot-proof. You enter the subject you want to create your course on and, poof, there’s your course.

Here’s the one I generated on ChatGPT prompts (albeit rather simplified and not yet to our specifications): ChatGPT Prompts Course (1 minute, 11 seconds to make).

With regards to the format of the course, it uses the following:

1. Introduction

2. Concept

3. Examples

4. Wrap-up

5. Quiz

6. Conclusion

Simple, yet effective.

All we have to do now is collate the data, spice it up a little with our findings in 1. & 2. and package it for our audience.

4. Combining steps 1-3

Alright so now we have 3 things:

1. The best prompts according to ChatGPT

2. The best prompts according to humans

3. Our course structure

How do we combine them together and package them effectively?

Unfortunately, CourseAI doesn’t have a native editor. Therefore, this step requires manual work.

I simply pasted my different sections into the basic course outline, added the content and worked some copy magic through ChatGPT. Whilst the course isn’t entirely comprehensive, it does represent the speed with which we can create content using AI. If time allowed, here’s what I’d add:

1. Interactivity (quiz after each section)

2. Analytics (track the progress of each student)

3. Video explanations (the critical human element)

5. Release product on Gumroad

What’s apparent from conducting this exercise—AI’s utility is improving exponentially. If today’s experiment is anything to go by, I’m excited to see how it will augment the creation of educational content in the future.
